The Stone Carving Studio with Kate Semple

Avebury to McMarmilloyds Yard

As well as working in the studio, Kate and her stone carvers have been out and about on some “school trips”.

Back in April, when the Beast from the East was hanging round, we had an atmospheric trip to Avebury. Julie, a regular Saturday stone carver, has also recently completed a degree in archaeology, so gave us a fascinating tour round the site in the mist and cold. Jeremy our resident expert on all things spiritual gave us an alternative history of the stones, the combination was fascinating.

Once we had finished with the wonderful stones of Avebury, we warmed up with some lunch and headed to McMarmilloyds near Marlborough, who stock and sell exotic stone for buildings and to carve.

They have quite a selection of alabasters, soap stones and serpentines to choose from, infact it’s an Aladins cave for stone carvers.

Several people bought pieces to bring back to the studio to work on and Kate enjoyed helping them discover the best way of working the stones with their different properties.
